TIME

It's all about Time

A couple of weeks ago we had a call with the Senior Missionaries in our Mission. They spent a lot of time talking about the upcoming time change.  I admit, I may not have paid attention.  And last night the time changed.  I now know why they spent so much time discussing that subject.  Our current home  is in Arizona.  Arizona does not use daylight savings time.   We are one mile from the Utah border.  Utah does go on daylight savings time.  Our area of the Navajo Reservation takes in parts of Utah and Arizona but it does use daylight savings time.  So when we woke up this morning.  Alexa thought she was in Utah.  Rich's phone thought he was in Arizona and my phone thought I was in Utah/Reservation.  Church used to be at 9:30 - well it's still at 9:30 Arizona time - but we are on the reservation so I think ( that's how confused I really am) that it started at 10:30.  I didn't even dare look at my watch.  We were the speakers so we made sure we got there on time - for whatever time it was.  Then we went and visited some people and invited them to the Relief Society Birthday Party and she asked what time it started.  The invitation said Mountain time.  Well was that Reservation Mountain Time, Arizona Mountain Time, Utah Mountain Time?  I really don't know - so in my time distress - I said just show up after you are done with work.  I'll be there.  I'm not sure what time I'll be there - but maybe if I stay at the church long enough, I can cover all the time zones.    We are thankful for the old school stove that the time doesn't change.

DIRECTIONS

There are no street addresses on the reservation.  I've never paid attention to mile post markers and my sense of direction is only slightly better than Rich's.  For those that know - this is a scary proposition at best.  (Yes we borrowed a satellite phone to help us - but one would have to be savy enough to use it)   Our afternoon appointment was over a mile on a dirt road - just stay on the main road and then turn right at the two ribbons hanging in the tree and then the house is a ways down the road on the left.  And if there was just one road - that would work, but if the current road gets too bumpy, then they just make another road fairly close to the first road.  All roads are ten lanes.  It's no problem finding a road - it's just staying on the right road.  Now our Junior Missionaries must have been forewarned of our awesome sense of direction because so far they have been very attentive at showing us how to get places.  I am fairly certain that we will be taking what I used to tell my children was the "scenic route" every time we were lost.  I'll let you know how that goes.

I have to admit that with no urban smog the sun is brighter and huge.

Thank you for praying for rain.  We met with some new friends Saturday evening.  They have over 30 sheep and 25 goats, a couple horses, a cow and a bunch of dogs.  I tell you this because they have no well and they have to go into a watering station to fill up the tank on the back of their truck to get enough water to water their animals.  When these folks pray for moisture to water their animals, it is a serious plea.

Rich noticed this Eagle formation in the sky.   The brave and strong Eagle is thought to be a messenger to the creator.  I love that thought.

  1. So fun to catch up on your blog and you mission experiences! Thanks for writing this blog! You are missed here in Draper, UT. And your full time service is such a great example! We heard from Sara Jane yesterday and the of the love she had for the people in the New Mexico, Farmington mission. It reminded me to come find your blog! Love you both! So grateful you received some moisture. We have had some much needed snow and rain storms here the past couple weeks. Debbie Gordon

  2. Funny about the time- this week at work, we were talking about Daylight Savings and my coworker was explaining the confusion of AZ time to me (she visits family in AZ and said her phone goes back and forth as they drive through/by reservations). I had never heard of this situation, but of course I wondered if it would affect you. Good luck with everything and thanks for the updates!

  3. Hopefully next year, there will be no time change anywhere if the bill passes!
